Meet the 2022 TDTU Engaged-Learning Team!

1. Dao Nhat Phi
My name is Nhat Phi or maybe you can call me Jimmy. I am a Junior at TDT University, majoring in Labour Relations. I live in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. I am excited to learn more about The US’s role in global supply chains and how it intersects with labor. I am excited to get to know the students at Cornell University although this is the third time I join the program with Cornell students but each time I have a new experience. Now I'm ready to learn new things with Cornell students. 

2. Nguyen Thanh Binh
Hello guys, my name is Bình, and I’m currently a sophomore at Ton Duc Thang University, majoring in Labor relations and Trade Union. I was born and raised in Hanoi, the capital city of Viet Nam, and i spent my first 18 years there. In 2020, i made the most important decision of my life, which was to pack my things up and move to Ho Chi Minh City for University, and i think to myself: “hey, THAT, is the right call”. I immediately fell in love with this city and its people, its culture, oh, and its food, highly recommend if you guys ever get the chance to visit the city. But for me, the most important factor here is the education, specifically TDTU, who gave me the chance to participate in the Vietnam Engaged Learning Program this year. I am more than excited to be a part of this program, and through this, I hope to get to know more about the US’s role in the international labor relations, and to get some new friends who share my interest in global politic, music and esports, which I am a huge fan of. 

3.Nguyen Nghiep Tri
Hello you guys .My name is Nghiep Tri , you can call me Tri. I’m a Sophomore Student of TDTU. I’m living in HCM City ,Vietnam and my hometown is Can Tho Province, which known as the Fruit Land which have many tropical fresh fruit. I hope that through this course , I can get acquainted with many friendly friends over the world, specially in Cornell University. So excited to meet you guys and talk about our major Labor Relation and also our culture. 

4. Vuong Nu Kieu Trang
Hello, my name is Trang. I am from Vietnam and I am a sophomore at Ton Duc Thang University. I major in Labor Relations. I sometimes read books, listen to music in my free time. I hope to learn new things about my major from foreign students through this course. Besides, I look forward to meeting and learning more about your culture. 

5. Nguyen Thi Truc Ly
Hello, my name is Truc Ly. I am currently a 2nd year student at Ton Duc Thang University, my major is labor relations. I was born in Quang Ngai province, central Vietnam, very far from the city center, so I went to Ho Chi Minh City to study. My hobbies are listening to music and watching movies. I am very happy to take this course as it has helped me meet new friends and exchange knowledge about my industrial relations major .Besides, I hope that I will have more foreign friends and more interesting knowledge about the different culture in your country after this programme. 

6. Tran Thi Mai
Hello, my name is Thi Mai and I am a sophomore at Ton Duc Thang university. I am majoring in Labor Relations, which is of Labor and Trade Union faculty. I find it very interesting to get to know about labor relations and labor law. Therefore, I am very grateful to have a chance to participate in this programme. I think it will help me a lot to broaden my knowledge about labor relations and everything related to it in another country. I am looking forward to taking part in all the activities in this programme. 

7. Nguyen Van Cong
Hello guys, my name is Cong and nickname’s Peter. And at present I am a second-year student in the TDTU, where I am studying Labor Relations and Trade Union. I grew up in Quang Ngai locating at the middle part of Vietnam or we have a saying for our hometown like “Mien Trung nuoc lu” “Mien Trung with storm and flood”. Because I am from the remote area like Quang Ngai and have a dream to achieve many personal challenges, so I decided to go to Ho Chi Minh in order to attend at university as well as explore the place that I’ve never been before. I am really interested in learning about many cultures of countries around the world like Korean, England, American, so forth. That’s why I have a chance to join in this online event between TDTU and Cornell University. I hope to see you guys and have more foreigner friends and useful knowledge as well. 

8. Nguyen Lam Thanh Nhu
Hi, my name is Thanh Nhu. Glad to be acquainted with you. I am a sophomore at Ton Duc Thang University, majoring in Labor Relations. I live in Ho Chi Minh City. I am very interested in the field of human resources, business... I am fortunate to have joined the course with students of Cornell University, this is a good opportunity for me to learn and exchange knowledge with you. I really enjoy interacting with international friends to improve my communication skills, but I'm still very shy, looking forward to getting to know you. 

9. Duong Thanh Ngan
Hello! My name is Thanh Ngan. I am a sophomore studying Labor Relations at Ton Duc Thang University. I was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City. I’m interested in watching movies, especially horror and action movies. I find myself a stronger person when I watch these films. There is another hobby that I really enjoy – gathering with my friends for chatting. Through this program, I hope I can make some new friends and improve my communication skill in English. It’s a great opportunity for me to be a part of this program. I am looking forward to getting more knowledge about labor relations and culture of other countries. 

10. Nguyen Thi Anh Tho
Hello. My name is Nguyen Thi Anh Tho. I am a sophomore in Ton Duc Thang University and my major is Labor Relations. I am from Ha Tinh, but now I live and study in Ho Chi Minh city. On campus, I am a member of the university’s Assistant Supervisor. Additionally, I am waiting for admission to the TDTU Singer Club. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, listening to music, writing stories and poetry. I am very excited for the opportunity to exchange and learn with students from Cornell University. I am curious how the labor relations in Vietnam will be different from abroad. I hope that after this program, I will experience more, improve my English and specialized knowledge. 

11. Phan Phuong Thao
Hello everyone, my name is Phan Phương Thảo, I am a sophomore at Tôn Đức Thắng University. I enjoy researching and learning about human resources and labor relations.I am really pleased to be involved in the ILR Vietnam Engaged Learning Program. Through this program, I hope to know more about the labor relations field and meet many new friends. Thank you very much. 

12. Huynh Nhu Ngoc
Hello! My name is Ngoc and I'm a sophomore at Ton Duc Thang University, majoring in Labor relations and Trade Union. I come from a city not to far from Ho Chi Minh City, which is Bien Hoa City. I am very excited to meet you guys from Cornell University and i am glad that we can have a chance to talk, to get to know one another so we can share our knowledge and points of view related to economics and labor relations from all over the world. 

13. Nguyen Tran Hoang Nam
Hi! My name is Nam, but you can call me by my nickname is John, I am a sophomore in Ton Duc Thang University, my major is labor relations. I'm come from Vung Tau city which got one of the most beautiful beaches in Viet Nam. I am so excited when I had an opportunity opportunity to share our culture, with a student in Cornell university. This is the first time I have so many international friends and I hope that can help me know more about my major in another country. On the other hand, I really love to communicate in English that can help me improve my speaking, listening a lot. 

14. Nguyen Van Cuong
Hello everyone, I’m Nguyen Van Cuong and I’m in the early 20s. I’m going to introduce myself. I’m in my last year in labor relation at TDTU. I currently live in Ho Chi Minh city. I am glad to be joint in the ILR Vietnam Engaged Learning Program, I look forward to improving my English skills and public speaking skills. Beside, this my chance to learn more about American culture, labor relations in Viet Nam. Thank you! 

15. Nguyen Bui Anh Thu
Hi, My name’s Anh Thu (Chloe) and I’m from Ho Chi Minh city where TDTU’s located. I’m currently a senior of Labour Relations at TDTU. I’m looking forward to meet students at Cornell University and excited to learn more about labour relations in Vietnam and also the globe. 

16. Tran Thi Nha An
My full name is Tran Thi Nha An but you can call me An. Currently I'm a sophomore in labor relations at Ton Duc Thang University. My hobbies are going out and hanging out with my friends, going to coffee, watching movies and going on a date. Sometimes I spend time at home cooking or surfing Facebook, tiktok and so on. I hope that after these studies, I will be able to improve my English level, make new friends, and have evidence to only further beautify my job profile later. 

17. Tran Thi Diem Phuong
Hi everyone, my name is but you can call me by my English name, Flora. I am currently a third year student at TDTU, majoring in Industrial & Labor Relations.I was born and raised in a small countryside in South Vietnam, currently I am studying and living in Ho Chi Minh city.Participating in this course, I have an enthusiasm in learning and expanding my knowledge in all aspects, especially the desire to listen to the sharing of knowledge from Cornell University students about field of industrial relations. 

18. Dinh Hoang Phuc
My full name is Dinh Hoang Phuc. I was born and raised in Kiên Giang province but I moved to HCM city last year. And now, I am currently studying at Ton Duc Thang University. “Labor relations” is the major that I am studying, and it is also my favorite choice. I am staying in a dormitory with my new friend and I visit my parents twice a month. Appearance-wise, people tell me that I take after my father from the mouth to the shape of my face. I think, if I wasn’t near-sighted, my face would be more beautiful. About personality, listening to music, traveling, singing is my favorite. When I travel, it makes me feel comfortable, I can open my eyes, learn many things and live a more open and sociable life. Traveling increases my knowledge and widens my perspective. To view new customs, different ways of living is fantastic for the mind. It gives us a new perspective about life and especially my life, it can help me change some of our habits or even create new ones. I can say that I am a responsible and hard-working student. Moreover, being a sociable person, I have many friends since I like to communicate with people and get to know new interesting individuals. I enjoy my time at school: it is really nice to study and the students are very friendly and ready to help. The atmosphere cannot but make me want to go there every time. I like to receive and deal with challenging tasks. I am a very enthusiastic student and I think this is a strong point of mine. My friends say that I am a very funny and interesting boy with a good sense of humor. As soon as I meet new people who are happy to meet me, I feel extremely comfortable with them. I believe that friendship is one of the most important values in human life. We exchange new ideas, find many interesting things about each other and experience new things. I appreciate the friendship and the people who surround me. 

19. Tran Thi Mai Loan
Hello! My name is Loan and I am a freshman at Ton Duc Thang university. My major is Labors relations. I am currently pursing law in labour. I want to protect the rights of poor workers who are exploited for their labour. I am very excited for the opportunity to participate in the group learning program with Cornell university this year! I hope to learn a lot of from people around the world about labor.

Meet the 2022 ILR Engaged-Learning Students!

 Audrey A, ILR'24


Hello! My name is Audrey A. and I am a sophomore in the ILR school. I am currently pursuing minors in Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies and Law & Society. I have a strong interest in public policy, politics, and law, especially concerning the topic of international immigration and migration. On campus, I am a member of the Advocacy Project, a student-led organization that aims to teach people the invaluable skill of public speaking. Additionally, I am a contributor for the Arts & Culture section of the Cornell Daily Sun! 

I am very excited for the opportunity to participate in the Vietnam Engaged Learning Program this year! I hope to research the broader impact of migration from rural areas to urban cities on the conditions of the workplace in major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City. Additionally, I am interested in learning about both union organized strikes and wildcat strikes and the respective impact of both in creating tangible change for workers. I look forward to working with students from Ton Duc Thang University and pursing my academic interests through this program! 

Cameron H. ILR'25

Cameron H. is a first-year student at Cornell University, where he is studying Industrial & Labor Relations. He was raised in eastern Pennsylvania. On campus, Cameron is a member of the university’s Student Government Association, the Rotary Club, the Scheinman Institute for Conflict Resolution, and is presently searching to join a finance-related organization. He also volunteers with several non-profit groups, including as an advisory board member for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and as a debate judge for the National Speech & Debate Association. Cameron is interested in pursuing a career in the financial services field upon his graduation from college.
Cameron is pleased to be involved in the ILR Vietnam Engaged Learning Program, where he anticipates gaining knowledge of the labor relations field, especially in Vietnam, through Ton Duc Thang University.

Sara J. ILR'24

Sara is a sophomore in ILR pursuing minors in Law & Society and Urban & Regional Studies from Seattle, WA. She is excited to take part in the ILR Vietnam Engaged Learning Program with TDTU because of her interests in comparative labor studies and labor law and she looks forward to collaborating with the TDTU students. On campus, she is a managing editor for the Undergraduate Labor Institute, a member of Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity, and a member of Cornell University Sustainable Design working on the Ithaca Carbon Neutral 2030 Policy sub-team. In her free time, she enjoys being in the outdoors, hanging out with friends, cooking, watching comedy and documentaries, and rooting for the Seattle Mariners.

Jiwook J. ILR'25

My name is Jiwook J., and I am a freshman at Cornell University–Industrial and Labor Relations School. I lived in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; Managua, Nicaragua; Princeton, New Jersey; and Seoul, South Korea. I am involved with the Cornell Daily Sun (the school’s newspaper), Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Cornell Outdoor Education. I am excited to learn more about Vietnam’s role in global supply chains and how it intersects with labor. I am excited to get to know the students at Ton Duc Thang University, and I am ready to learn and grow with my cohort at TDTU.

Emily M. ILR'24

Hello. My name is Emily M.. I am a sophomore transfer in Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. I am from a smaller town in Northern California called Redding, though I was born in New Zealand. I am involved in Cornell's collegiate Mock Trial program, Christian Union Vita, and I am employed at the Statler Hotel in the Meetings and Events department. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing board games with my family, baking, and poetry.
I look forward to the Engaged Learning Program in Vietnam for two reasons: the people and the research. I am eager to engage with people with whom I have had no interaction before and learn about a culture with which I have no experience. I also anticipate researching the international dynamic within Vietnam's labor system; getting to research my own interests with the support of the Scheinman Institute is an opportunity I will not pass up.

Kathleen M. ILR'24


My name is Kathleen and I am a sophomore in the ILR School! On campus, I work at the Office of Engagement Initiatives and mentor job-seeking individuals with disabilities. I am pursuing a minor in Inequality Studies, so I look forward to exploring labor practices and collective bargaining in Vietnam through a social impact lens. I am excited to learn about labor relations on a global scale and learn from my Vietnamese peers.

Simon R. ILR'24

Hi all! My name is Simon R. and I’m a sophomore in ILR. I am originally from Paris, France but moved to New York City when I was 8 years old. On campus I am involved with Sports Aptitude, the Dr. Nikitin lab, and the Scheinmann Institute. I am looking forward to meeting the Vietnamese cohort and researching important economic and labor related topics throughout Vietnam. I hope to apply the knowledge and skills that I have developed at Cornell for this experience.

Amalia S. ILR'24

Amalia is a sophomore at Cornell’s school of Industrial and Labor Relations from the city of Philadelphia. Majoring in industrial and labor relations with a minor in Spanish, Amalia aspires to work within the intersection of migration and education in the future.
Amalia has been involved with Cornell’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, working with La Fundacion Futuro to teach English to young leaders of Ecuador. She has worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant for ILR’s Advocacy and Debate course and enjoys writing stories and learning new languages in her free time.
I am looking forward to learning more about Vietnam’s unique culture and labor relations. I am also grateful and excited for the opportunity to learn from our Vietnamese peers during this experience.

Anthony W. ILR'24

Hello, my name is Anthony W. I am currently a sophomore at the ILR School at Cornell University. I am originally from South Korea, but I moved to the United States, where I currently live in California. At Cornell, I am a part of Shimtah, a traditional Korean drumming club as well as the Global Affairs Club. Through this program, not only am I excited to learn about labor relations in Vietnam, I am also excited to meet the students at TDTU. Thank you!

Eric Y. ILR'24

My name is Eric Y, I am a sophomore transfer student in ILR from Poughkeepsie, New York. On campus I am a research analyst for the Undergraduate Labor Institute, and am a member of the Music Improvisation Ensemble. I have an interest in labor law and labor relations, and labor and commerce on an international scale. Some of my hobbies include music production and fashion.
I am looking forward to learning more about Vietnam due to its prominence as an agricultural producer and manufacturing hub. In addition, I want to broaden my knowledge of labor relations outside the United States and learn more about how labor operates across the globe.
